ARKADELPHIA — Henderson State completes a season sweep over Arkansas-Monticello, defeating the Blossoms 72-63 inside the Duke Wells Center. The Reddies improve to 6-4 in the GAC and 9-7 overall.
Ashley Farrar went 10-20 from the field and 4-7 from beyond the arc, scoring a game-high 30 points while also recording 11 rebounds. Abbie Jiles set a new career-high with 13 rebounds and also scored eight points. HSU shot 42.4 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from the three-point line. The Reddies made their trips to the foul line count, leaving only two points at the charity line, going 13-15.
After a back-and-forth start to the game, an 8-0 run by HSU that featured triples from Farrar and Olivia Allen, would give Henderson a 10-6 lead. Farrar had the hot hand in the first period scoring back-to-back threes to give the Reddies a ten-point lead after one period, 23-13.
A basket and a trip to the foul line by the Blossoms brought them within single digits, but two jumpers from Brynlee Huggins and Jasmine Bailey would re-establish Henderson’s double-digit lead, 29-16. Gracie Raby connected from deep before UAM ended the second period with a 7-0 run to cut HSU’s lead to seven at the half, 35-28.
Arkansas-Monticello opened the second half with a jumper, but Sonni Martin replied with a three-pointer to keep the Reddies’ advantage at eight, 38-30. Martin’s second trey of the period, followed by two makes from Farrar at the foul line, gave HSU a 47-40 with 4:01 left. The period ended with two makes at the foul line for UAM, down 49-44.
The Blossoms brought the game within three with a jumper before the Reddies regained control with back-to-back treys from Jiles, 55-48. Seven straight points from Farrar would give Henderson some breathing room, up 68-52. UAM resulted to fouling in the final minute of the game, hoping to cash in on a missed shot from the foul line, but Bailey and Allen converted their attempts.
Henderson (9-7, 6-4) will cross the highway on Monday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. to face Ouachita Baptist in the first installment of the Battle of the Ravine.
