Tigers add D1 transfer

ARKADELPHIA — The Ouachita Baptist University men’s basketball team has signed LaQuan Butler Jr. after three seasons playing at the NCAA Division I level.

Butler Jr. comes from the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, where he played in 40 games over the past two seasons, finishing his tenure with an average of 7.4 points per game in 670 minutes of playing time. He led the Vaqueros in scoring in their 2021-22 season-opening win over Texas A&M-International with 19 points. In his first season at UTRGV, he posted two games with at least 20 points, including his career high of 22 points in a 65-point victory over Dallas Christian.

Prior to his two years at UTRGV, Butler, Jr. played one season at Southeastern Louisiana, where he averaged 5.5 points per game in 24 games. The Benton Harbor, Michigan native began his collegiate career at Chipola College in Florida, where he averaged 5.8 points per game in 32 contests and sunk 82 percent of his foul shots.

“We are excited to welcome LaQuan to our Ouachita family,” said Ouachita Head Coach Dennis Nutt. “He has a tremendous work ethic and desire to become an outstanding player in this conference. His basketball journey has awarded him lots of experience and knowledge that will help us reach our goals as a team.”

The six-foot, 170-pound guard will join the team for the 2022-23 season for his fifth and final year of eligibility.
