AFD to flush fire hydrants in June

ARKADELPHIA — The Arkadelphia Fire Department will be performing its  annual fire hydrant flushing throughout the month of June.

Annual fire hydrant flushing is necessary for the maintenance and upkeep of  city water lines, as it helps clear sediment from the system. This process also  ensures fire hydrants are working properly and allows firefighters to update flow rate readings.

Arkadelphia firefighters will flush a different quadrant of the city’s fire hydrants each week in June. Weather permitting, the schedule is as follows:

June 1-3 Zone 3 Northeast Quadrant
June 6-10 Zone 1 Southwest Quadrant
June 13-17 Zone 2 Northwest Quadrant
June 20-24 Zone 4 Southeast Quadrant
ZONE 3: The Northeast Quadrant includes neighborhoods north of Pine Street between 15th Street and the Ouachita River.
ZONE 1: The Southwest Quadrant includes neighborhoods south of Pine Street, between the old Peake Elementary School building and Unity Road.
ZONE 2: The Northwest Quadrant includes neighborhoods north of Pine Street, between 15th Street and W.P. Malone Drive.
ZONE 4: The Southeast Quadrant includes neighborhoods south of Pine Street, between the old Peake Elementary School building and the Ouachita River/Highway 67.

Fire hydrant flushing will begin at 1 p.m. on the days listed above, and will take approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete.

While it is still safe to drink, the Fire Department recommends turning off automatic ice makers while fire hydrants are being flushed. The department also recommends waiting to wash light-colored clothing to avoid the possibility of discoloration.

The Fire Department will be sharing weekly updates regarding fire hydrant flushing on its Facebook page, “Arkadelphia Fire Department.”
