For many, Memorial Day is part of a three-day weekend holiday, the beginning of summer celebrated with warm-weather activities. For one group of dedicated cross-country walkers, however, it’s a day to honor those who have fallen in the line of duty.

At midday Wednesday, May 25, a crew from Carry the Load marched through Arkadelphia to raise awareness for the nonprofit organization. The walkers began this leg of their trek Wednesday morning at the Hot Springs Police Department and ended the day’s walk on the western side of Arkadelphia.

Tackling a trek stretching from Berlington, Vermont, to Dallas, Texas, this group started its New England route 22 days ago and plans to make it to Dallas by Memorial Day. The four total routes — Midwest, West Coast, Mountain States and East Coast — will cover all 48 continental states.
“We’re walking to bring back the true meaning of Memorial Day,” said team crew member Cassidy Dillard who handles the group’s social media. “It’s not all barbecues, lake days and mattress sales. We walk in remembrance of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
