Shields earns 2nd GAC Player of the Week honor

Deldric Shields

RUSSELLVILLE — For the second time this season, Henderson State’s Deldric Shields was named Great American Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Shields was terrific in the Reddies’ 34-3 victory over Southern Nazarene on Saturday. The Pittsburg, Texas native finished with six tackles and an incredible 4.5 tackles for loss — the most tackles for loss in a single game by any Henderson defender since 2011.

His stellar play helped spearhead the HSU defense in a dominant effort against SNU. The Reddies kept the Crimson Storm out of the end zone in the win and racked up 15 total tackles for loss as a team.

The weekly award is Shields’ second of the year. He is the first GAC player to win the award multiple times this fall and Henderson State is the only school to have won three Defensive Player of the Week honors this season.

The Reddies (8-1) face a big test on Saturday when they travel to Shawnee, Oklahoma to take on Oklahoma Baptist (6-3) at 2 p.m.
