Two firefighters from the Arkadelphia Fire Department are deploying to south Louisiana to help with recovery efforts following Hurricane Ida.

Arkadelphia firefighters Blake Ausley and Jake McGill will join a team of 20 firefighters from departments around the state to assist in relief efforts.

Arkadelphia firefighters Jake McGill and Blake Ausley, centered, pose with Mayor Scott Byrd and Fire Chief Jason Hunt.

The team will be meeting in Texarkana and traveling to Baton Rouge tonight.

“The whole point of me becoming a firefighter is I wanted to be able to help people,” McGill, who just completed his first year as a firefighter, said. “Being able to go down there and help all of those people in need is probably the best way I could go about doing it.”

The 14-day deployment will consist of ‘structural firefighting.’ Structural firefighting covers a broad range of assignments, from clearing streets to filling in for other firefighters who have been assisting in recovery efforts since the storm made landfall.
