A 14-year-old Hot Springs boy died Saturday after an outing with family on DeGray Lake.

Authorities were called to an area on the lake near Lenox Marcus for a rescue mission at 12:39 p.m., April 13, 2024. The teenager reportedly fell from an inner-tube and went under water after struggling to keep afloat.

A state park ranger who responded to the scene made multiple dives to recover the boy, who was about 16 feet beneath the surface. Once located and taken to the shore, emergency personnel began performing life-saving procedures.

The boy was transported to CHI St. Vincent Hospital in Hot Springs, where he remained alive and was transported to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. It was there that he would later succumb, at about 7:30 p.m.

A relative who also attempted to aid first responders in the rescue was taken to an area hospital for medical treatment.

The victim was not wearing a life preserver at the time of the accident.
