It took the Arkadelphia Board of Directors nearly three hours to rate City Manager Gary Brinkley’s job performance as “between good and excellent.”
During its regular meeting Tuesday, the city board concluded a trio of executive sessions discussing Brinkley’s annual review. Brinkley was called into the private discussion 30 minutes into the 80-minute session. Previous sessions were held during the board’s August meetings.
Upon reconvening in public, Mayor Scott Byrd said that, despite social media criticism of the city, Brinkley got a “very favorable review” from the board responsible for hiring the city manager, which oversees the day-to-day administrative operations under the elected board’s direction. Furthermore, Brinkley declined the board’s second offer to provide a merit increase because of the city’s “financial restraints.”
“[Brinkley] does a fantastic job for us, and he will be remaining” in the position, Byrd added.
No other director added comments when Byrd gave the opportunity.
In routine business, Byrd also addressed Facebook criticism of the city board’s retreat, which is an annual planning and discussion session held with department heads and the city manager. Byrd noted that the cost to taxpayers for the retreat is between $100-$150, which covers venue rental and refreshments.
