From the National Weather Service in Little Rock
A majority of the state has an Extreme Heat Warning in place given the forecast high temperatures in the triple-digits across much of the state in tandem with oppressive heat index values which will exceed 115 degrees in some locations. Practicing heat safety on Tuesday is a must.
The heat index value in Arkadelphia is forecast to be as high as 111.
The area remains under an Extreme Heat Warning through 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 21. Dangerously hot conditions will exist in several portions of the state. Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave anyone or pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
Take extra precaution when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency — call 911 if symptoms are observed.
