Harold Thomas Jones affectionately known as “Buckwheat,” passed on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. He was born on September 27, 1954, in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, to Tommy Jones and Genoa Summerville Jones. He was a gentle giant and a charismatic presence in every room.
He graduated from Sparkman High School in 1972, excelling in both baseball and football. A proud veteran, Harold enlisted in the United States Army on July 12, 1974. He served embodying dedication and honor.
Buckwheat later returned to Arkadelphia settling in the Millcreek Community. He was a former employee of Reynolds Metal Company and later he worked in construction with the Bunn Construction Company. With his towering height he was a natural athlete. He also contributed to the community league as a pitcher for the Millcreek Braves. His love for sports was matched by his passion for fishing.
He always brought energy, laughter and the possibility of having a great time whenever he was around. He enjoyed blues and old school music which often resonated with his personal life. He was always a loyal friend and never backed down from a fight.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tommy and Genoa Jones and a close friend, Stanley Quarles.
“Buckwheat” leaves a lifetime of memories with his children, Shelia Jones, and Kenneth (Dominique) Jones all of Arkadelphia, AR and Keith (Chantel Jackson) Jones of Tacoma, WA; an adopted sibling, Kizzia (Clifford) Jones of Bryant, AR; Allen “Chip” Brim of Little Rock, AR whom he loved as a son; his siblings, Elizabeth Jones, Arie Lee Brown, and Phillips T. Jones all of Arkadelphia; seven grandchildren, O’Shaneia D. Nelson, Kentrel J. Jones, Amarya A. Jones, Kiyon O. Jones, Jomir Jones, Kiana S. Jones and Antoine N. Jones and five great-grandchildren; an uncle, Eddie Lee (Ella) Summerville of Arkadelphia, AR and an aunt, Mattie Butler of Lansing, MI as well as, nieces, nephews cousins, special friends Roy Johnson , Jr., Dennis “Dickey Boy” Johnson and Larry Wiley, and other friends.
Visitation will be on Friday, January 30, 2026, from 12 to 7 pm, with a family hour from 6 to 7 pm at the funeral home. Services will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 12 noon at Gennesaret Baptist Church. Rev. J. L. Newborn will deliver the message. His burial will follow at Piney Grove Cemetery, with military honors.
