A Gurdon man was seriously injured in a wreck Friday evening, Nov. 21, 2025, after he fled from police.
According to a report filed by Officer Thomas Free of the Gurdon Police Department, he was on routine patrol Friday around 11:30 p.m. when he observed an older white convertible traveling at a high rate of speed. Being familiar with the car and the driver, 31-year-old Jujuan Marks, Free turned on his take down lights and attempted to make a traffic stop. In response, the suspect accelerated to a very high rate of speed in the 35 mph zone on Highway 53 South.
As the chase continued, Marks passed two vehicles at a high rate of speed on a double yellow line. Due to fog and public safety, Free was forced to slow down and ended cup losing sight of the car around Slack Road.
Minutes later, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office notified Free of a 911 call reporting an accident. Responding back to the Slack Road and Highway 53 area, Free found the convertible upside down in a parking lot, about 35 feet off the road. Evidence at the scene indicated that the car had apparently struck the railroad tracks, bending a rail, which caused the vehicle to go airborne and flip several times, ejecting both driver and passenger.
Free spoke first with the passenger, a 32-year-old Gurdon man, and then the driver, who told him, “Free, I [messed] up.”
Free noted that Marks had an apparent odor of intoxicants emitting from his person. Both occupants were transported to the hospital for their injuries. Marks was later placed on a ventilator due to having broken all of his ribs in the crash.
Possible charges listed in the report were fleeing, battery, reckless driving, improper passing and driving on a suspended license. The accident was handed over to the Arkansas State Police for investigation.
