South Arkansas could pick up 3-4 inches of rain this Memorial Day weekend

Widespread rainfall is expected across the state in the coming days, according to the National Weather Service in Little Rock.

The highest amounts are likely across northwest Arkansas, though the latest forecast map shows a potential for much of southern Arkansas to receive 3 to 4 inches of rain.

Storms that form overnight Friday in northern Arkansas will push toward the south into Central Arkansas on Saturday morning.

The Arkadelphia area will have a 20-30% chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday through Saturday evening, increasing to 40% Sunday and 80% late Sunday night. Memorial Day is expected to be a wet one, with a 90% chance of rain and possibly a thunderstorm. The pattern continues Monday night with a 60% chance of precipitation.

An active pattern will continue through Thursday of next week, with Saturday through Monday having the highest chance of widespread flooding over central and northern Arkansas, with 3-5 inches of rainfall predicted. Northwest Arkansas will see the highest potential with up to 6-7 inches of precipitation Friday night through Monday evening.

Campers or anyone spending the Memorial Day holiday near rivers or streams should use extreme caution, and be equipped with a way to receive weather warnings and have a plan to evacuate to higher ground in the event a flash flood warning is activated.
