John “Mark” Willett, affectionately known as “Pops” by nearly everyone who knew him over the past 20 years, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, at the age of 83.
Born on July 14, 1941, Mark dedicated his life to education and service, spending his entire career as a respected school principal in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Through his leadership and compassion, he left a lasting impact on countless students, teachers, and families. After he retired, he moved his residence to Arkadelphia to be closer to his family. He was an integral part in the opening of Slim & Shorty’s in Downtown Arkadelphia, where you would find him bussing tables and greeting people from the patio daily. He took great joy in being there and rarely took a day off until his later years.
Pops is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Misty Willett Harris, and her husband, Kelly Harris. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Allie and Hayden Harris, who brought him endless joy and pride.
Outside of work, Pops was an avid fisherman, golfer, and sports fanatic. From horse racing to football to basketball, he would watch it all. If he wasn’t at home watching the big screen or sitting out on his front porch listening to the radio, chances were you’d find him on the lake or at a golf course, enjoying the peace of nature and the camaraderie of friends. He was known for his bright, warm smile and the genuine friendliness he extended to everyone he met. Pop’s kindness, steady presence, and love for life will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
