Arkansas Historic Preservation Program hosting National Historic Marker Weekend

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP) is encouraging Arkansans to join in the annual National Historic Marker Weekend from April 25 – 27, 2025. The weekend-long event will focus on caring for and cleaning historical markers across the state.

Previously celebrated as National Historic Marker Day, this initiative was created by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, a national organization committed to supporting the celebration and preservation of community history. This year, the event was expanded to an entire weekend.

Currently, the Historical Marker database shows that there are more than 209,000 historical markers in the United States. Many are not being routinely cared for or cleaned.

AHPP Director Scott Kaufman says, “Arkansas Historic Markers are an investment not only financially but are an outward and visible way to preserve historic locations, people, and events. Cleaning them so the text and artwork have integrity conveys the message that our state values Arkansas history.”
