The National Weather Service in Little Rock is warning Arkansans of an elevated wildfire threat Wednesday as gusty winds will continue and much drier air is expected to move across the area.
Gusty west to northwest winds will continue through the late afternoon hours. Until 6 p.m. expect 20-30 mph winds with gusts as high as 45 mph. Winds will begin to subside after dark for most areas.
Much drier air will be noted this afternoon with humidity levels falling between 30-40% over a large part of the state. There will be a heightened fire danger during the afternoon given the drying conditions and winds.
In spite of high fuel moisture levels, the dry air and gusty winds will allow the finer fuels to dry out enough to possibly carry surface fire. Conditions are expected to remain above red flag criteria.
Clark County remains among one of many in southern and eastern Arkansas under a moderate risk level of wildfire, meaning fires can start from accidental causes. Caution should be taken. Local fire department agencies are urging residents to avoid burning.
