Dispatch Desk: Feb. 24 – March 2

The following incidents were gathered from reports filed at the Arkadelphia Police Department and Clark County Sheriff’s Office. Names of arrested individuals were collected at the Clark County Detention Center on Crittenden Street in Arkadelphia. They are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law. The Arkadelphian does not withhold names from the arrest log, so don’t even think about asking.

A man reported being duped by an online scam. He received an email that appeared to originate from the Federal Trade Commission saying his Social Security number had been connected to multiple crimes. The parolee said he followed instructions and called the number provided, speaking with individuals with heavy accents who directed him to withdraw $1,000 from his bank account, buy gift cards with the amount and provide them with the card numbers. The reporting officer noted that the email originated from a .com address rather than .gov, and advised him to monitor his credit reports for fraud.

Officers responded to Carpenter Hill Apartments, 670 S. 6th St., for a 911 call about a pregnant woman beating at the door saying someone was trying to kill her. An officer made contact with the female, who said she wanted to be an exotic dancer and had been lured to Arkadelphia from Malvern by a named male who promised he was starting a business and had an opportunity for her. She said she got hot and asked the man to turn down the thermostat, but he wouldn’t and so she went to knock at a neighbor’s door. Police also spoke with the male, who denied picking her up so therefore wasn’t going to offer her a ride back to Malvern. The lady requested a medical evaluation and was given a courtesy transport to the police department, where paramedics checked her and transported her to the emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

City officials in Gurdon reported someone had unscrewed the top of a fire hydrant in Beirne, causing a significant loss of water pressure in the area and spraying water all over the roadway and in the yard of a Highway 51 residence. Damages were estimated at $2,000.

3 p.m.
Deputies were summoned to a Trigg Lane (DeGray) residence, where a grass fire had gotten out of hand, and were met by 4-5 large dogs that gave chase and forced Deputy Chase Kersey to retreat to his vehicle. Deputy Steven Holt maced a dog, and the other canines fled. Both deputies then ran to the backyard to find the homeowner, who had fallen while trying to contain the fire. She was helped to her feet and removed from the yard, coughing excessively and with a melted/burned shirt and scrapes to her arm. With rakes and shovels they found in the backyard, the deputies attempted to contain the fire, which by this point had burned a garden and was headed toward the caller’s residence, a shed, and a neighbor’s home and barn. DeGray firefighters arrived on scene and doused the blaze that had fully engulfed the shed. Other fire departments — Arkadelphia, Caddo Valley, Hollywood, Gum Springs and Curtis — were called to assist, as well as the Arkansas Forestry Division, to establish a perimeter.
