12:03 p.m.
Officers were called to Walmart for a complaint of a shoplifter attempting to leave the parking lot in a blue car. An officer arrived within a minute and spotted the suspect vehicle. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop with blue lights and intermittent siren blasts as the driver exited the parking lot and drove slowly toward Pine Street and waited for the traffic light to turn green. Despite motions and verbal commands to pull over, the vehicle continued east at a “blistering 20 mph” until the driver pulled over at Cox trailer park. The driver, 66-year-old John H. Nelson, of Caddo Valley, was handcuffed and detained as he denied any wrongdoing and said he thought police were giving him an escort home. A female passenger was also detained. Nelson remained adamant that he was under the impression police were giving him an escort, adding he didn’t have a good place to pull over. He later said that his passenger was dissuading him from pulling over. Walmart’s asset protection arrived at the scene and requested any charges be dropped against the female because the initial attempt to stop her was done so prior to her passing the last checkout station; the merchandise was recovered in an abandoned shopping cart. The female was banned from Walmart properties for a year, and Nelson was issued a citation for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
