We recently heard Henderson State University Chancellor Dr. Trey Berry talk about how he sends handwritten notes in the mail to both prospective and current students. It’s a special craft, he says, that adds a personal touch to communicating. It’s a practice that leaves a lasting impression on the recipient since — let’s face it — hardly anyone puts ink to paper these days.
With so many people turning to their devices to communicate, we ponder whether local people still practice the tradition of sending Christmas cards to connect to friends and family.
Approximately 1.1 billion cards are sent annually through the mail, according to the U.S. Postal Service.
A poll similar to this one, published online in 2023 by Southern Living magazine, suggests that Christmas cards are becoming a dying art. Yet we at The Arkadelphian still send and receive cards in the mail. (Full disclosure: It’s The Spouse who creates and sends our cards, which include a Happy Holidays message and feature our adorable Chihuahua puppies in the foreground of a seasonal backdrop).
We hope our readers will take a few seconds to answer our latest poll. We’ll leave it up for a couple of weeks and post the results closer to the Christmas holiday.
