A federal jail assessment team on Thursday will inform the general public about findings from its assessment of the county jail.
The group, known as the Jail and Justice System Assessment committee and based out of Washington, D.C., arrived in town Monday night to spend much of the week evaluating procedures at the Clark County Detention Center.
The panel travels the U.S. assisting and making recommendations for approving detention centers. As the panel concludes its assessment locally it wanted to report findings to the Clark County Quorum Court, which set a special-called meeting on the matter for 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21. The meeting, open to the public, will take place in the Clark County Circuit Courtroom, which is located upstairs at the Court Complex.
Although it can’t be ruled out, no quorum court action is anticipated. The meeting is expected to be informational.
Sheriff Jason Watson told The Arkadelphian that he contacted the assessment team and requested it visit the local jail. Like the public, the sheriff will first learn about the panel’s findings at Thursday’s meeting.
According to the National Institute of Corrections website, jurisdictions that are considering the renovation of an existing jail or constructing a new one can apply for aid in evaluating their current facility and the role of their jail in the local criminal justice system. The team will assess the physical condition of the jail and interview criminal justice stakeholders about policies and practices that affect the jail.
The assistance from NIC will result in recommendations related to new construction or renovation and observations concerning areas of the local justice system that affect the jail population. Following a presentation of its recommendations and observations, NIC will document its results in a follow-up report.
