A Hot Springs roofer went to the police department to report check fraud in connection with a job on Logan Street. Someone by the name of “Kevin” had mailed him two checks, the sum of which was $20,000 over the bid, with instructions to deposit them into a local bank along with a text message requesting him to wire $10,000 to Lebanon claiming he needed to pay the previous homeowner. After doing that, the roofer had commenced to purchasing supplies and preparing his crew for the job when the bank informed him the checks were fraudulent and the money had been removed from his account. The roofer added that “Kevin” had threatened to send an assassin because he had not sent the wire transfer. Police called “Kevin”, who spoke with a “thick Middle Eastern accent” and became aggressive when questioned about the validity of the checks. Investigators then became involved and determined it would be a civil matter given the international nature of the scam, the suspect not having benefited from any work done to the residence, and the wire transfer not having been completed.
