Hallways filled with smoke, apparently from a malfunctioning air conditioning unit, greeted Arkadelphia firefighters responding to an alarm Saturday morning at the Nightingale Nursing Home.
Firemen found staff members evacuating residents into the courtyard away from the affected area and proceeded to determine the fire threat and smoke source. Once the source was determined not to be a fire and confined to one room AFD personnel, with the assistance of firemen from the Caddo Valley and DeGray fire departments, turned their attention to smoke removal and assisting the Nightingale staff as needed.
Fire agencies were dispatched to the scene at about 8:10 a.m. Residents were escorted back inside within about an hour of being evacuated.
