Hot, humid weekend ahead for Arkansas

Hot and humid weather will return to much of Arkansas this weekend, the National Weather Service in Little Rock says. High temperatures will top out well into the 90s, with corresponding afternoon heat indices ranging from 95 to 104 degrees.

A ridge of high pressure will build toward Arkansas from the northeast, with conditions becoming oppressive by this weekend and continuing into early next week. During this time frame, the HeatRisk in The Natural State will be Major to Extreme. HeatRisk, an experimental color-numeric-based index, takes into consideration how unusual the heat is for the time of year, the duration of heat during both daytime and nighttime, and if those temperatures pose an elevated risk of heat-related impacts based on data from the Center for Disease Control.

Actual daytime temperatures in Arkadelphia are forecast to top out at 98°F with calm wind from the southwest. Nighttime lows will be in the low 70s. The next chance of precipitation comes Tuesday, which is expected to also be mostly sunny and hot.
