Pine Street utility work set to start; delays expected

Traffic cones and roadwork will be the new norm for Arkadelphia for quite a while as Pine Street undergoes work.

Expect delays, street closures and detours on Pine Street for the next several months as crews relocate city water and sewer lines.

By the end of this week and starting between Tiger Mart and the new Peake Elementary School, crews with the Hot Springs-based Coakley Co. are expected to begin breaking ground to relocate utilities. Sam Smedley, lead contractor on the project, said the work will include replacing manholes, the sewer main and water main, as well as replacing fire hydrants and water meters along the right-of-way.

The months-long process will pave the way for the Arkansas Department of Transportation to widen Pine Street, between 10th and 26th streets, to include a turn lane.

Motorists are urged to use an alternate route to get to their destination, if possible. The presence of dump trucks and heavy equipment along Pine Street will be the norm for the next several months, Smedley said, cautioning drivers to be mindful of flaggers and to be patient during the process.

Most of the utility work will be done during daylight hours, from about 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., with some nighttime work possible.

Pine Street, also state Highway 8, is currently maintained by ARDOT; once work is complete the state will hand over ownership to the City of Arkadelphia.
