7 nabbed in Gurdon meth sting

GURDON, Arkansas — Local authorities arrested seven people in an early morning raid Thursday, Feb. 22.

The Gurdon Marshal’s Office and other agencies conducted raids at “multiple” residences, making the arrests from 12 drug-related warrants. The agency reported the suspects were arrested on warrants issued for selling methamphetamine.

The following suspects were booked into the Clark County Detention Center following the arrests:

Melvin Hatley, 50

Patrick Shields, 60

Corey Turner, 45

Jerome Rogers, 54

Christina Howell, 25

Kristy Sanders, 43

Rosa Cruz, 46

They were being held on police charges of possession of a controlled substance with the purpose to deliver. Some charges are expected to be amended. Formal charges are pending and will be determined by the prosecutor.

“This has been a year-long operation to take our streets back here in Gurdon,” the agency said in a Facebook post Thursday afternoon. The investigation was led by city Marshal Don Childres. “Under his direction, numerous drug purchases were used to obtain the arrest warrants served today. Also, it is important to note that all of the methamphetamine that was purchased undercover also field-tested positive for fentanyl.”

More than 30 law enforcement officers converged for the bust. Agencies assisting the marshal’s office were the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Group 6 Drug Task Force, Arkansas State Police, Arkansas Game & Fish Commission, Arkadelphia Police Department, Arkansas National Guard Counter Drug Intelligence Unit for providing a helicopter, Arkansas Probation and Parole and Clark County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Turner.

The marshal’s office said it’s “not done yet” in its efforts to keep meth off the streets.

The prosecutor said he appreciates the work by Marshal Childres and assistance of local law enforcement agencies. “We are fortunate in Clark County to have agencies that not only cooperate with one another but are also eager to help keep our communities safe,” Turner told arkadelphian.com following the arrests. “So many families have been impacted by drug usage and the crimes often associated with illegal narcotics. We will continue to focus efforts on pursuing those who profit off of illicit drugs in our county.”
