UPDATED WITH VIDEO: I-30 pursuit crosses Arkadelphia overpass

Innocent motorists could have easily been hurt near quitting time Thursday, Feb. 15, on Arkadelphia’s busiest thoroughfare as a fleeing motorist led Arkansas State Police on a pursuit that crossed Pine Street’s intersection with Interstate 30.

A state trooper called in the westbound pursuit at 5:06 p.m. as it neared the Arkadelphia exit at the 73 mile-marker. The motorist exited the interstate at Arkadelphia and, reportedly without pause, crossed Pine Street at the MLK Overpass to get back onto I-30.

It would be a short-lived pursuit, but one that crippled the fleeing motorist. Two minutes after the trooper radioed for backup, a maneuver by the trooper stopped the driver at the 70 mile-marker prior to the Gum Springs exit, where he reportedly attempted to cross the median but hit a cable separating the east- and westbound lanes.

The driver reportedly exited the vehicle as it was still in motion, and was run over by his own mode of transportation.

Medical personnel were summoned to the scene to administer treatment to the now-injured driver. He was initially transported by ambulance to Baptist Health Medical Center in Arkadelphia, then med-flighted to a Little Rock hospital for further treatment.

Authorities have not identified the driver or given the cause for his attempted escape, but said he is a 40-year-old white male from Texas. His medical condition was not known Friday morning.
