2024 Black History Month celebration scheduled for February 1

The City of Arkadelphia will be hosting its second annual Black History Month celebration on Thursday, February 1 in the Town Hall Atrium.

The celebration will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the recognition ceremony of the 2024 class of Black History Month honorees. City officials will then lead the honorees, their families, distinguished guests and event attendees on a guided walk through the city’s downtown area to view the 2024 banners on display.

The 2024 class is comprised of 10 notable African Americans who were either from Arkadelphia or made an impact on Arkadelphia throughout their lives.

These individuals were selected by the city’s Black History Month nominating committee. Comprised of five African American community leaders, the committee began the selection process in October 2023.

“The committee selected a wonderful class of honorees,” Mayor Scott Byrd said. “We have educators, politicians, activists, professionals- It’s fantastic. We look forward to recognizing them on February 1 and every February in the years to come.”

The 2024 class will join the 12 honorees from the 2023 class in having their likenesses displayed on banners in the city’s downtown area. These banners will be on display annually during the month of February.

A feature on the 2024 class of Black History Month honorees will be released on February 1, 2024.
