This post has been updated to include the names of restaurants planned to open in Arkadelphia.

Records were obtained from the city’s Building Department under the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act and include valuations of work except where omitted from reports. Here’s a rundown of permits issued in December 2023:

Two restaurants are expected to open in Arkadelphia, according to building permits filed in December. One is located at Arkadelphia Plaza, 112 W.P. Malone Dr. The Oklahoma-based FSNB Sub 4 LLC filed for a permit to remodel a suite for a new restaurant; the estimated cost of the job is $15,500. A sign in front of the plaza advertises that AMBAR, which serves Mexican cuisine, is coming soon. A separate permit allows the plaza owner to install a 14’x5.5 wall sign above suites A and B.

A second restaurant, Matty’s, is due to open at 313 S. 10th St. The diner, owned by Darren and Patricia Ayres, will open once the former brick home has been remodeled into a commercial restaurant. In recent months the city’s Planning Commission and Board of Directors rezoned the property from residential to commercial use. The remodel is reported to cost $48,800.

December’s largest building project, estimated to cost $1.35 million, was filed by Southwest Auto Collection. The company filed for two permits to remodel its corporate offices at 1501 N. 10th St. ($1 million) and 1451 N. 10th St. ($350,000).

Ouachita Baptist University is quite literally paving the way to erect a new field for its athletics program, as the college was the recipient of a permit to prepare groundwork at 948 N. 8th St. for a NCAA track. Ouachita lists itself as the contractor for the job, which is estimated to cost $715,171.

Ouachita also lists itself as a contractor to build a 40’x16′ deck with 20’x16′ metal roof at 810 8th St. Cost of that project was estimated at $12,000.

Sonic Drive-In underwent a remodel during December, as the Oklahoma City-based JJMTC LLC hired Mira Enterprises to remove the restaurant’s bullnose and replace it with red ACM. The $160,498 job also included a maintenance upgrade and installation of deck panels.

In preparation for the Arkadelphia Bypass project, the Arkansas Highway Commission hired McKenzie Farms & Excavating, of Gurdon, to demolish a 1,800-SF single-family dwelling and a 8,770-SF storage building (not a typo) at 725 S. 7th St. Cost of the demolition was valued at $70,000.

Arkadelphia Public Schools contracted Nabholz to add a wall to split two classrooms at Goza Middle School, 140 Badger Lane.

Hardman Lumber Company hired Seale Construction Co., of Sparkman, to install a detention pond on the back of its property at 3004 Pine St. at a cost of $22,000. In a separate filing, Seale Construction was hired to install a 40’x110′ rod-iron metal T shed for $188,609.

Other building permits issued in December:

1052 Phelps Circle, Paul White Construction, construct 21’x25′ addition to single-family dwelling, $97,422

803 Carpenter St., JJ Jonesboro LLC, shingle removal and replacement, $15,340
