For the Week in Clark County History, we combed through bound copies of the Daily Siftings Herald to choose some front-page news from editions dating 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
10 years ago: 2013
An overnight storm knocked out power to more than 1,000 Arkadelphia residents. Most of the storm’s damage was isolated to an area between Walnut and Center streets from 19th and 16th streets, where numerous felled trees blocked city streets. A trampoline belonging to a Hartford Drive resident blew across Walnut Street into a neighbor’s yard.
Vandalism at the newly opened DeSoto Bluff park drew the ire of the Arkadelphia Police Department.
Local police recovered an abandoned vehicle belonging to a murdered 71-year-old Jessieville man whose body had been found in the Ouachita National Forest. The vehicle was reported abandoned at the gas plant on U.S. 67 south of Gurdon.
20 years ago: 2003
Town Hall’s geothermal heating and air system, which was installed when the facility was constructed and said to save up to 40% on energy bills, quit working. City officials purchased several window air-conditioning units for temporary relief from the summer heat.

A construction company working on a downtown streetscape project in Arkadelphia unearthed a 10’X4’ steel petroleum tank at 7th and Clay streets. Officials surmised the tank was likely placed there in the 1930s to serve a former fuel station, as Arkadelphia was once known for having a gas station on nearly “every street corner.”
The Clark County Historical Association was busy putting the area’s history on display at the old train depot, now home of the county’s History Museum.
30 years ago: 1993

Henderson State University took over operations at the Arkadelphia Municipal Airport after Central Flying Service, the city’s fixed-base operator for more than 10 years, terminated its lease agreement.
A group of about 30 area residents attended a public listening session at DeGray Lake Resort, where a group discussed a proposed entrance fee at the park.
