Week in Clark County History: June 11

For the Week in Clark County History, we combed through bound copies of the Daily Siftings Herald to choose some front-page news from editions dating 10, 20 and 30 years ago.

10 years ago: 2013

A city committee called the Racial and Cultural Diversity Committee submitted a resolution to the city Board of Directors recommending that Pine Street be named in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The committee’s decision passed in a 4-2 vote.

20 years ago: 2003

A Gurdon history teacher, a 26-year-old female, was arrested for sexual misconduct with a 15-year-old male student.

Retired airline pilot Bud Welch was featured for having built a scale model of the Wright Brothers’ Kitty Hawk airplane. The replica, which took him four months to build, was in demand for various displays throughout the state.

Heavy rainfall of about 5.5 inches caused countywide problems: a portion of Highway 8 near Amity was washed out, several homes in Gurdon were evacuated and a gas station flooded, and city streets throughout Arkadelphia were damaged. One weather-related traffic accident on Highway 84 claimed the life of an Amity woman and her young son.

A survey revealed that Arkadelphia residents paid less for their water than 151 other water systems in Arkansas.

Arkadelphia Lions Club was featured for their readiness to hoist about 300 American flags throughout the community in observance of Flag Day, one of nine flag holidays of the year.

30 years ago: 1993

The widening of Pine Street between 26th Street and Interstate 30 was underway as utilities were being cleared and underground drainage was being installed. The actual widening of the road wouldn’t be complete until the following April.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site of Arkadelphia’s new 60-acre wastewater treatment pond north of 3rd Street’s intersection with Copeland Ridge Road.

Henderson State University’s Evans Hall was undergoing a $1.1 million renovation that included Internet access. Each student the next fall was to have an individualized computer account allowing them total access to the Internet, as well as computer services and email.
