Badgers begin season with route of Ricebirds

The Arkadelphia Badgers took a 9-7 win over the Stuttgart Ricebirds Monday night in a game at Maumelle Charter High school.

A five-RBI performance by left fielder Daniel Kesterson, getting two in the third inning and three in the fifth, were key factors in the Badger win.

“This is his first year to start and Daniel has put in the work every day,” Coach Drew Loe said about the junior. “Tonight it shows … he came in in clutch situations and did big-time things.”

The game was back-and-forth to begin with, as there were multiple lead changes, but a big fifth inning for Arkadelphia put them up for good, sealing the game for the Badgers.

“We started off a little slow, middle of the way we got a little bit warm, and then got a little bit better there at the end,” Loe said. “We’ve got to be able to put things away. We gave them a chance to come back at the end of the game, so we just have to be not as lackadaisical and just go shut the door.”

Heading into the final inning, the Badgers led 9-4, and three runs by the Ricebirds almost gave Stuttgart fans hope for a comeback before Donovan Whitten was able to strike the last batter out to seal the game.

The Badgers have a quick turnaround as they head back home Tuesday night to face off against the Bismarck Lions.
