4 die in Hot Springs crash

Four people were killed Saturday afternoon in an accident that involved four separate vehicles.

Among the deceased were Julieanna Gonzalez, 57, of Glenwood; Linda Godwin, 67, of Royal; Rebekah Schaffer, 35, also of Royal; and one unnamed juvenile.

The accident happened at about 2:24 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, on Highway 270 near Jaguar Trail in Hot Springs. According to a preliminary fatal crash summary filed by the Arkansas State Police, Andres Gonzalez was traveling eastbound in a 2020 Hyundai and crossed into the opposite lane, causing the driver of a westbound 2009 Hyundai to swerve in order to avoid the collision. In the process, the second Hyundai struck a vehicle driving parallel to it, sending it across both lanes of traffic into the south ditch.

The eastbound Hyundai and a vehicle behind it struck the westbound Hyundai, according to the report.

Listed in the report as injured was Andres Gonzalez, the driver of the eastbound Hyaundi. Gonzelez was transported to UAMS hospital with unknown injuries. His passenger and three occupants of the westbound Hyundai, including its driver, were killed. The bodies of the deceased were being held at the Garland County Coroner’s Office.

The weather and road conditions were listed as cloudy and rainy, according to Trooper D. Robbins who investigated the accident.
