BITS & PIECES: Saturday, June 18

It’s Saturday morning! Get out out of bed and head over to the Clark County Farmer’s Market. Find farm-raised lettuce, tomatoes and onions for that burger you’re grilling this afternoon. Speaking of burgers, you might even find some farm-raised beef or pork for sale. You won’t know if you don’t go!

Federal, county and city employees will be on holiday Monday, June 20, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. Sanitation and mail routes will not run Monday in Arkadelphia or Clark County. These holidays were awarded to city and county employees earlier this year.

Our many thanks to the staff at the Arkadelphia Area Chamber of Commerce for referring a company to advertise in this local news website. We have faith that the Chamber strives to support its members to keep local businesses alive.

We detest the word “utilize”. Use “use” instead. It’s one syllable and means the same thing. Save your energy.

Fuel prices suck, everywhere. No one is happy about it, not even we hybrid drivers. There I finally said something about it. Happy now?

Creature in the Woods
Part 4/10
We swatted at gnats, mosquitos and deer flies at the edge of the branch, the points of our shoes sinking in the sand as we took turns crouching over for a camper’s bath. We dipped our hands into the cold stream and splashed our faces to clean them of sweat. Sauntering back to the campsite Mom stopped us, grabbing both our arms and hushing us. “Did you hear that?” she whispered.

What sets The Arkadelphian apart from these Facebook “news sites” is we have a name attached to our product and our company. Sure you might find some breaking news on social media with a headline like “Shots fired at So and So” with some unverified information with an advertisement as a photograph. Not here. And we’re not “Facebook News,” so you’ll find more relevant local information here than you do there. Joel Phelps is the publisher, editor, reporter, webmaster, bookkeeper and janitor of this limited-liability, web-based company. Our mission is to inform our growing audience of 3,892 readers of news events and to document daily life, to our best ability, in Arkadelphia and surrounding communities. We verify our information with official sources and records, and our advertisers collectively support the news and information you find on this site.

Now, where did I leave those darn nail clippers?

  1. Not only is it great to have a real person with a real name and a real phone number and email delivering the news, it lessens the possibility of logarithm error. A headline about a Bismarck School Board controversy was delivered to me last week as “local news” from near Arkadelphia by the NewsBroken app. Turns out it was from Bismarck, SD. I’ve also gotten news from Malvern, Pa. Sigh. Glad you’re here, Joel.
