David Etienne

David Eugene Etienne, age 80, of Arkadelphia, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, surrounded by care and compassion.

Born on August 18, 1945, in Indianapolis, Indiana, David was the son of the late Lois Elizabeth Ensminger Etienne and William Edward Etienne.

David devoted his life to music and education. He served as a professor of music at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia for 42 years, from 1971 to 2014. As a flute instructor, he influenced and mentored generations of students, leaving a lasting impact on the university and the many lives he touched. He was the third longest-tenured professor in the university’s history and was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus of Flute.

Beyond his work in music, David was also an accomplished pilot. He earned his pilot’s license and spent many hours flying, reflecting both his skill and his adventurous spirit.

A lifelong Roman Catholic, David found comfort and peace in his faith, especially in his final days.

David will be remembered not only for his dedication to music, but for the profound impact he had on his students. He was known as a teacher who cared deeply, who challenged and encouraged those around him, and who brought both humor and humanity into the classroom. Many remember him not just as a professor, but as a mentor, a supporter, and a friend.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Arkadelphia, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. His ashes will be present. There will be no graveside service.
