Sheriff warns of traffic fine scam

Clark County Sheriff Jason Watson is warning citizens of a scam that claims they have unpaid traffic fines.

The sheriff said his department has received numerous calls from folks who say they received a text message advising they have a civil summons due to unpaid traffic fines.

Disregard it as nonsense, Watson said in a Facebook post on Thursday, April 2.

The scammers claim that their would-be victims have a mandatory court appearance, allowing them to handle it out of court by following a link to pay the fine immediately.

“Folks, this is a scam!” the sheriff said, urging recipients of such messages to delete them. “The court will never send you a text referencing unpaid fines … You didn’t get caught on a radar in Wyoming speeding and now have a warrant.

“Delete [the text] and do not follow any links and give your banking information out.”
