Ellen Ludwig

Ellen Theisinger Ludwig, of Bismarck, Arkansas, passed away on March 24, 2026, at the age of 92.  Born on October 24, 1933, in Mainz, Germany, Ellen was the youngest of three born to Jakob and Katharina Theisinger. Her early life was defined by the profound challenges of the Second World War. Having witnessed the destruction of her home city and the tragic loss of her beloved brother, Otto, she emerged with a resilience, strength, and unwavering faith that would serve as the cornerstone of her character throughout her long and full life. 

Following the war, Ellen pursued an education in metalworking. Seeking new horizons, she traveled to the United States, a journey that would change the trajectory of her life. While working for a host family in Estelline, South Dakota, she met Horst “Bud” Ludwig. The two were married on March 21, 1960, and moved to Dallas, Texas, where they raised their three daughters.  In the 1990s, Ellen and Bud relocated to Bismarck, Arkansas, to be closer to family. An artist at heart, Ellen was a dedicated member of the Arkadelphia Art Guild and a familiar participant in the “Round About Artist Studio Tour” for several years, sharing her beautiful jewelry and sculptures with the community. She was also known for her love of cooking authentic German cuisine and her ability to turn every family celebration into a memorable occasion. Her passion for culinary arts lives on today through her daughter, Lorraine, at Ludwig’s Bakery.   

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Jakob and Katharina Theisinger, her brother,Otto Theisinger, her brother-in-law, Herbert Müller, her husband of thirty-nine years, Horst (Bud) Ludwig, and her son-in-law, Frank McSwain. 

Ellen is survived by her sister, Rita Müller of Germany; her three daughters, Lorraine McSwain, Jackie (Jeff) Cobb, and Beatrice Ludwig; her grandchildren, Michaela (Dusty) Pope, Erika (Kyle) Riggan, Sean (Taylor) McSwain, Keely Cobb, Kayla (Cole) Shuffield, and Delaney (Nestor) Cortez; and her great-grandchildren, Emma Riggan, Ellen, Parker, and Louis Pope, Mason and Abigail McSwain, and Roczen Shuffield. She also leaves behind several beloved nieces and nephews of Germany. 

She will be remembered for her enduring strength, her creativity, and the deep love she held for
her family.
