The following incidents were gathered from reports filed at the Arkadelphia Police Department and Clark County Sheriff’s Office. Names of arrested individuals were collected at the Clark County Detention Center on Crittenden Street in Arkadelphia. They are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law. The Arkadelphian does not withhold names from the arrest log, so don’t even think about asking.

Monday, Jan. 12

Felony incident still under investigation: Theft of a motor vehicle, 100 block of W.P. Malone Drive

10:07 p.m.
An officer was summoned to Cole’s Secure Storage, 12 Stephenwood Dr., for a customer’s report that his vehicle had become lodged in the gate upon exiting the premises. The policeman was able to push the gate open on the driver’s side to allow clearance for the vehicle to exit. The vehicle sustained a minor scratch as a result of the incident. The business owner was notified of the incident and was able to reset the gate remotely.

Tuesday, Jan. 13

Police were called to Nightingale Nursing Home, 2701 Twin Rivers Dr., for a staff report of a physical altercation between dementia patients. Nurses witnessed the incident and separated the parties.

Wednesday, Jan. 14
6:30 p.m.
Officers responded to Walmart for a store complaint of a shoplifter who stole $491 worth of merchandise. The suspect, Gwendolyn Adrianna James, 29, of Prescott, was cited for theft of property and trespassed from the store.

Thursday, Jan. 15
8:10 a.m.
A resident of Matt Stone Apartments, 1817 Millcreek Dr., reported the theft of a vehicle license plate.

6 p.m.
A landlord cleaning a South 4th Street rental property turned in a de-faced .25 caliber pistol. The firearm was collected and logged into evidence.

Sunday, Jan. 18
2:37 a.m.
Responding to a one-vehicle accident at 26th Street and Evergreen Drive, an officer discovered an electrical box uprooted from the ground and a shattered mailbox in the roadway. Thirty yards from the debris was a Ford pickup parked in the street with fluid leaking underneath. The driver, identified as Ruben Hernandez-Garcia, 34, of Arkadelphia, exhibited signs of intoxication as he stepped from the vehicle per the officer’s instructions. Failing a series of field sobriety tests, Garcia was arrested for DWI.

3 a.m.
Officers were called to a residence at the 1500 block of Walnut Street for a report of an unknown person being in the front yard. Police made contact with two females and Xavier Lashawn Heyward, 19, of Arkadelphia. From previous dealings with Heyward the officer knew one of the females had a protection order against him; separating the two, Heyward spat at the female and struck her in the face. The officer then “assisted” Heyward to the ground and placed him in custody. The other female then reported that Heyward had damaged a mirror on her vehicle. Heyward was arrested for violation of a domestic order of protection, third-degree domestic battery, and criminal mischief.

2:44 p.m.
Police and medical personnel were dispatched to a vehicle-vs-pedestrian accident at 329 N. 14th St. Upon arrival the man who was struck was sitting in a yard complaining of pain to his right shoulder. He said he was walking south when a dog chased him into the street and, running backwards, he fell as a southbound vehicle hit him. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital. A witness said the driver swerved before making contact, instead striking a curb as the man fell to the ground next to the vehicle. The driver provided a similar account. Police found no evidence on the vehicle that it had struck a person. The dog’s owner, Casey Sallings-Kimbrell, was cited for violation of the city’s leash law and given a court date.

Tuesday, Jan. 13
3:06 p.m.
A Hollifield Road, Amity, man reported his vehicle had been vandalized and his home possibly broken into. The responding deputy found no evidence that the home had been forcefully entered.

7:03 p.m.
Responding to a call of an all-black-clad pedestrian walking in the middle of Highway 53, a deputy found Jonathan Dewayne Smith, 43, of Gurdon, near Stevenson Road. Smith exhibited signs of having ingested narcotics and alcohol, and was arrested for public intoxication.

Wednesday, Jan. 14

An Arkadelphia woman reported the fraudulent use of her EBT card, discovering her balance had been wiped out when trying to use it at a grocery store. It had last been used in New Jersey and New York.

Saturday, Jan. 17

An Arkadelphia woman reported almost falling victim to a scam. The fraudster called advising she would receive a credit for Verizon’s service outage that week. She was ultimately connected with an “FBI agent” who wanted her Social Security number and instructed her to “test” transfer a large sum of money from her bank. Following through with the request, she told the “agent” that her bank wasn’t comfortable with the transaction, so she was instructed to buy several thousand dollars’ worth of prepaid credit cards at Walmart’s self-checkout. Associates there were quick to inform her that she was falling victim to a scam, and she hung up. 

9:22 p.m.
Patrolling the area of Southfork Truck Stop, a deputy stopped a vehicle with a defective taillight. The driver, Larry Neill, 67, possessed a suspended license. The passenger, asked if he had a license to drive the vehicle, provided a false name. He was later positively identified as Timothy Lane, 61, by way of a portable fingerprint scanner. A check through the state crime database revealed that Lane had a felony warrant out of Gurdon. Neill was cited and later released for driving with a suspended license, and Lane was arrested for criminal impersonation and obstructing governmental operations, and was served with the felony warrant.
