A pair of community meetings slated for Monday, Nov. 3, ahead of a special election on a millage question will include time for public comment and a question-and-answer forum. The Q&A session comes after an informational presentation from district officials and school board members.
Two community meetings are set for noon and 5:30 p.m. in the Arkadelphia High School Little Theater.
In August the Arkadelphia school board approved a resolution asking for the public’s support of a 3.0 millage increase that would, if passed, fund the construction of a new high school.
Supporters accept a higher tax bill in opting for a safe, secure school for AHS students.
Opponents of the measure say they’re taxed enough already, especially considering an increase recently implemented in a countywide reassessment of properties, and that the school district should instead rely on that increase to pay for a new facility.
It will cost about $62 million to build the new school, with $6 million committed from the district’s building fund and another $19 million from state partnership funding. The millage, if passed, would fund up to $37.1 million for the new school.
The new school would have a safe room, fine arts auditorium, career education center and an arena gymnasium.
Early voting for the millage issue begins Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the Arkadelphia Recreation Center, 2555 Twin Rivers Dr. The election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 18.
The district has added a page to its website that includes information on the current AHS facility, the proposed campus and its financial desires. CLICK HERE to visit that website.
