Shovel-wielding suspect shot dead by Garland County deputy

PINEY, Arkansas — State police are investigating an officer-involved shooting Tuesday evening that left a Hot Springs man dead.

The Garland County Sheriff’s Office requested an investigation by the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division (CID) following the Oct. 7 incident. According to a state police press release, a Garland County deputy sheriff responded to a call around 8 p.m. to Ebony Way in western Garland County regarding a man reportedly swinging a shovel at a passing vehicle.

The deputy, as yet unnamed, arrived to encounter Anthony Michael Dean, 34, who reportedly threatened the deputy with the shovel. The deputy then discharged his service weapon, fatally striking Dean.

Dean’s body will be transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine the official manner and cause of death.

Special Agents of the ASP CID will prepare an investigative file to submit to the Garland County Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine whether the use of deadly force was consistent with Arkansas law.

The investigation is ongoing.
