Woman accused of tossing wheelchair-bound stepmother in roadside ditch
A pair of motorists traveling to work early on the morning of April 10 spotted a hand waving from a roadside ditch on Arkansas Highway 51 near Hollywood. The Good Samaritans stopped to find a mobility-impaired woman separated from her wheelchair, and phoned 911 for help.
About half an hour earlier, an Arkadelphia store clerk took note of some odd remarks a customer had made about her stepmother, describing her as a “pain in the ass” and wishing she were dead.
Clark County Deputy Teddy Rocole responded to the 911 call and soon phoned Investigator Russell Ursery about his findings. At the time of the call, Ursery happened to be at the store where the clerk reported the off-color comments, and asked to pull surveillance video of the customer’s time at the store. Meanwhile, at the incident scene, the 62-year-old victim identified the suspect as her stepdaughter, Alisia Sue McDaniel Cox.
The victim was transported by ambulance to Baptist Health Medical Center-Arkadelphia for treatment and observation. At the hospital, the victim told police that Cox had picked her up from a nursing home and was headed to Cox’s residence in Campbell, Texas. The victim added that the trip “went way off course” and at one time they wound up in a casino. While in Arkadelphia, the pair stopped to buy a drink at McDonald’s, and Cox covered her stepmother in a blanket because she was cold. Somewhere between Arkadelphia and Hollywood, the victim said, Cox tossed her drink and blanket from the window of the moving Ford SUV.
The victim said that, moments later, Cox “told me she was putting me out and was not taking me to her house. [Cox] pulled over, came to the passenger side and pointed a gun at me, threatening me and pulling me from the car. I hit the ground and rolled into the ditch.” Cox then allegedly removed the wheelchair from the back of the SUV and tossed it on top of her stepmother as she lay in the ditch.
Following the issuance of an arrest warrant Cox, 43, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on May 10. According to court documents, a $50,000 bond was set for Cox’s release.
Cox is charged with a trio of Class D felonies: aggravated assault, terroristic threatening, and endangering the welfare of an incompetent person. Each count carries a prison sentence of up to 6 years and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
