Police visit sex offender on Halloween, find cocaine and meth

A Halloween home visit to a Clark County sex offender turned scary for local police when the parolee hurled furniture at officers as he fled his Arkadelphia apartment.

Schuyler (pronounced “Skyler”) Markese Marks answered the door to his residence at Walnut Street and US Highway 67 on the evening of Oct. 31, 2024, to find that his parole officer and a Clark County Sheriff’s Office investigator were there for a visit.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Marks, 33, and an unnamed female in the apartment were asked to sit on a couch as police conducted a search of the residence. Parole officer Adam Trichell found, in a bedroom, what he believed to be methamphetamine, and confronted Marks of the discovery. Marks was instructed to stand up to be handcuffed, then allegedly picked up a coffee table, threw it at Trichell and ran out the door, knocking down Sgt. Sherry Cleek in the process. Sources say Cleek was treated at the local hospital for minor injuries suffered when Marks knocked her to the ground.

While other officers tried locating Marks, Trichell continued his search of the apartment and found 31 grams of methamphetamine in one bag and 34 grams of cocaine in individual bags. Another bag containing pills was field-tested but showed no indication for controlled substances. All the suspected drugs were sent to the state Crime Lab for positive identification.

Police also seized more than $600 in cash, as well as Guatemalan quetzals worth about $10.

Police later caught up with Marks on Nov. 7 and made an arrest. At the time of this writing he remained incarcerated at the Clark County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $75,000 bond.

He has been formally charged with two counts of felony drug possession and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, and prosecutors are seeking sentence enhancements given Marks’ status as an habitual offender.

Originally convicted in a 2010 case of sexual indecency with a child, Marks again found himself in trouble following a 2017 traffic stop in Arkadelphia that netted marijuana and a loaded pistol in his vehicle.
