Since 1986, John Ed Stewart has lived peacefully in the Macedonia community on land brimming with his family history.

And before a crypto-mining facility became operational in the Macedonia community just off County Road 12, he never thought anything about his life on his property would change.

“Listen,” he said during a February interview, pointing toward his garden beds and the wooded area behind his house recently, and then toward the sky, “You can’t hear anything but that hawk.”

Now residents like Stewart are concerned the noise the crypto-mining facility in their neighborhood occasionally creates is only a fraction of what’s to come with the summer looming ahead.

The buzzing of the computers has already been noticeable on the land to which he retired after a career with Albemarle Corporation. He watches almost every sport except professional football inside his shop while he prepares for the next hunting season. He said it’s not loud all the time, but when it is, it is noticeable, and it disturbs him.
