Letter to the Editor: Microschools Can Work Wonders

Submitted by Shaquita Keys, Arkadelphia

I write as a parent concerned by the proposed Education Rights Amendment and its likely catastrophic effects on microschooling in Arkansas, because the East of Ordinary Microschool and its educators in Arkadelphia have been so vital to my son Aaden’s educational journey.

East of Ordinary has benefited him academically, socially and emotionally. Before attending East of Ordinary, Aaden struggled in public school with both his grades and behavior. He often found it difficult to stay focused, motivated and confident in himself. This school has effected a complete transformation in him that has truly been amazing to witness.

Aaden’s grades have improved tremendously, and he now takes pride in his schoolwork and accomplishments. He has become more responsible, determined and eager to learn. His behavior has also improved greatly. He shows more respect, patience and self-control both in and outside of school. The positive environment and support system at East of Ordinary, made possible by being a microschool, have helped him grow into a successful young student.

A major reason for Aaden’s progress is the genuine love, dedication and support shown by the staff, who have all played such an important role in his journey. They truly care about the students and their families, and it shows in everything they do. They go above and beyond to encourage, support and guide the children to succeed not only academically but also personally. Microschools are built on relationships, and I would hate to see that endangered.

East of Ordinary is more than a program. It is a family, a unique community that uplifts children and helps them realize their full potential. For Aaden this has been nothing short of life-changing. Seeing his growth, confidence, improved grades and positive behavior has been such a blessing. We are incredibly thankful for the care, patience and commitment the staff has shown toward Aaden and our family. I sincerely hope their impact will continue to make a difference in his life for years to come.
