Cold temperatures return this weekend

Don’t get too used to the spring-like weather of late, as sub-freezing low temperatures will return to Arkansas by Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service in Little Rock’s latest extended forecast for the Arkadelphia area.

A slight chance of showers will linger Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, with precipitation chances ranging from 20-30%. Friday’s daytime high of a warm 61 will fall to a chilly 42 before Saturday brings a mild daytime high of 57.

Saturday is expected to be a breezy one, with gusts as high as 15 mph. Temperatures Saturday night will fall to about 31, with even colder nightly lows through Monday.

Following a Sunday high of 57, the low that night will be 26 under clear skies. Monday will be similar, with clear skies, a high of 52 and a low of 25.

Nightly temperatures will warm to the mid 40s by Tuesday, when daytime highs will reach the mid 60s.

Clark County under Moderate Risk for wildfire

Conditions aren’t good for burning throughout the western half of the state, including Clark and neighboring counties.

The latest Wildfire Danger & Burn Ban map from the Arkansas Forestry Division shows more than a dozen counties in the northwestern corner of the state to be under a high risk for wildfire; county judges in about half of those counties have issued burn bans.

In Clark County, where the risk is moderate, fires can start from accidental causes. Though they may not become serious threats, caution should be taken.

Risk levels are determined by fuel conditions, drought status and long-term weather forecasts, and are categorized by how hard a fire may be to contain.

As of Feb. 17, the U.S. Drought Monitor map put the southern half of Clark County under a D1 Moderate Drought, and the northern half of the county was categorized as D2 Severe Drought.
