A $20 million grant for facilities at Southern Arkansas University Tech in East Camden is among projects funded Tuesday, February 3 with congressional approval of budgets for several federal agencies.
Congress sent to President Trump full-year funds for the Departments of Defense, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education as well as other related agencies.
The president has indicated that he will sign the legislation.
SAU Tech will receive $15 million to construct an “Aerospace Defense Manufacturing Center of Excellence,” plus $5 million to provide educational equipment for the center.
SAU Tech is located in the Highland Industrial Park, which is a major manufacturing hub for defense contractors including Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, Raytheon Technologies, General Dynamics and others. Workers make products ranging from flares and solid rocket motors to the final assembly of hand-held and vehicle mounted missiles. The school works closely with the defense contractors to provide job-specific training for the workforce.
