MAGNOLIA, Arkansas — For over a century, the Mount Prospect Methodist Episcopal South Church building sat undisturbed across from the church cemetery on Columbia Road 66 just a few miles from Stephens.
On Thursday, May 23, 2024 the historic building left for an 18-mile trip to the campus of Southern Arkansas University where it would join two other 19th century structures on the Historic Farmstead and Learning Center.
This week, the initial phase of the move was completed as the building now sits on the piers that will be its new home.
The seed for the addition of the church to the SAU campus was planted oddly enough when the Alexander-Warnock House was dedicated back in 2020. Buddy Morgan of Camden, a great-great grandson of Sam Alexander who built and inhabited the house that bore his name, had a suggestion for Dr. Trey Berry and Josh Kee: Wouldn’t they like to add a church building to the other two buildings?
