The Literacy Council of the Ouachitas (LCO) announced its expansion of services into Clark County, Arkansas, in its ongoing commitment to fostering a literate community. With a vision to remove barriers and provide support, the LCO aims to address the pressing issue of low literacy affecting 23% of adults in Clark County, according to recent statistics.
Low literacy rates pose significant challenges for individuals, impacting their access to employment, education, and healthcare, while also contributing to broader community issues. Recognizing the importance of intervention and support, the LCO is extending its reach to Clark County to provide essential literacy services to those in need.
“We are dedicated to our mission of supporting individuals by building multi-faceted literacy skills,” said Sarah Richardson, executive director of the Literacy Council of the Ouachitas. “Expanding into Clark County allows us to reach even more individuals and empower them with the literacy skills they need to thrive.”
Volunteers needed
Volunteers are the lifeblood of the LCO, and the organization is inviting passionate community members to join its efforts in Clark County. Volunteer opportunities include tutoring, assisting with recruitment events, administrative support, and more.
To kickstart volunteer engagement in Clark County, the LCO will host a free Volunteer Orientation Session on April 25, 2024, at 5:30 PM, at the Clark County Library. During this session, attendees will learn about the organization’s mission and vision, available volunteering opportunities, and how to get involved. Prospective tutors will also receive information about additional training provided by the LCO.
“We believe that together, we can make a meaningful impact on literacy in Clark County,” added Richardson. “By working collaboratively with volunteers and community partners, we can break down barriers and create a more literate and empowered community.”
