Emergency repairs at Rec Center forces craft fair cancellation

The Twin Rivers Craft Fair has been canceled due to emergency repairs needed on the gym floor.

Last week, Recreation Center staff discovered issues with the gym floor, which was believed to be caused by moisture in the sideline area under the stairs. Initially, it was a small raised area, but the problem expanded into a large “bubble.” The affected area has been marked off and poses no threat to public safety.

“It appears to be a moisture issue under the floorboards,” Parks and Recreation Director Stuart Tapson said. “Staff quickly identified the problem and closed the area to visitors. While it is still safe for people to come in and shoot baskets, it is unsafe for a high-traffic event like the Twin Rivers Craft Fair.”

Due to scheduling conflicts, the Twin Rivers Craft Fair will not be rescheduled.

“We are incredibly disappointed that we have to cancel this event,” Recreation Center Operations Manager Alicia Nichols said. “We had over 30 incredible vendors signed up and we were really excited. However, our utmost priority is the safety of our vendors and residents. We will absolutely host this event in 2025.”

Parks and Recreation is working to address the moisture issue in the gym floor. A solution will be presented at the city’s Board of Directors meeting on June 18. If the solution is approved by the Board of Directors, repairs will start as quickly as possible.
